Sound comes from all directions, including overhead, to fill the cinema with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth.
Puts Sounds into Motion All Around You
The sounds of the onscreen story move all around you in three-dimensional space, so you feel like you’re inside the action.
Creates a Powerfully Moving Entertainment Experience
It’s sound that excites your senses and inspires your emotions to deliver the full impact of entertainment.
Conveys the Artist’s Intent
Dolby Atmos® gives artists amazing new capabilities to tell their stories, accent their games, or perform their music—so you can experience the power of the artist’s vision.
Freeing Sound from Channels—the Dolby Atmos Concept
Dolby Atmos creates powerful, moving audio by introducing two important concepts to cinema sound: audio objects and overhead speakers. Together, these completely change how soundtracks are created and heard.
Traditional surround soundtracks confine all sounds to a small set of channels that can deliver sound to you from only a few percei
ved angles. They cannot put sound above you. Further, sounds exist only as part of a channel mix. If one sound is emphasized in a traditional mix, another must be diminished.
In Dolby Atmos, by contrast, sound can be freed from channels. It enables artists to treat specific sounds as individual entities, called audio objects. These can be precisely placed and moved by the soundtrack creator anywhere in the cinema’s three-dimensional space—they are not confined to specific channels—though the artist can continue to use channel capabilities as desired. The Dolby Atmos cinema processor then determines which of a cinema’s huge array of front, back, side, and overhead speakers it will use to recreate this lifelike movement.
As a result, a Dolby Atmos soundtrack brings alive the onscreen story as never before possible. The movie’s sounds flow all around you to completely immerse you in the action, heightening the impact of the story and creating a powerfully moving cinema experience.
Four Surround Zones
One of the innovations of Dolby Surround 7.1 is the creation of four distinct surround zones in the theatre. These surround zones provide filmmakers with greater control over the exact placement of each detail in their soundtracks.
The orchestration possibilities that Dolby Surround 7.1 introduces allow mixers and sound designers to more accurately match their audio to the visuals onscreen. This means more depth and greater realism for you at the movies.
In addition to improving the side-to-side panning of sounds and sound localization, Dolby Surround 7.1 enhances audio definition, so you hear individual sounds more clearly and distinctly. It also widens the listening “sweet spot”—in other words, the full power of Dolby Surround 7.1 is not limited to a handful of seats in the center of the theatre.
A Unique 3D Technology for Cinema
Dolby 3D differs from other 3D cinema technologies and provides an experience completely faithful to what the movie’s creators envisioned. Dolby 3D uses a unique full-spectrum color technology that provides extremely crisp, clear images. The Dolby 3D movie system has a rotating color filter wheel that can insert automatically into a digital projector for 3D movies.
Inside the projector, the wheel filters the light before the image is formed, resulting in an unaltered image with both its color and quality preserved. For 2D movies, the wheel can be set to automatically retract, avoiding any of the picture-quality issues caused by 3D filters being left in place for 2D shows.
Dolby 3D projects full-color images for the left and right eyes. The projection uses two slightly different sets of primary colors. The audience wears passive 3D glasses with complementary filters precisely tuned to match the filters in the projector, ensuring that each eye sees the correct image.
A Superior Presentation Every Time
With its massive screen and powerful sound system, today’s movie theatre can bring out the best in action-packed blockbusters and quirky independent features alike. But just as easily, it can bring out the worst.
When a film becomes scratched or faded from repeated showings, every flaw is magnified. What was supposed to be a colorfully rich panorama looks dull and somber. Special effects lack impact. And the story suffers as a result.
That will never happen with Dolby Digital Cinema. By replacing the traditional film print with a digital bitstream, it ensures that every showing of a movie looks like the first.
Colors never fade, and details remain vibrant as ever. Because Dolby Digital Cinema reproduces each sound and image with digital accuracy, you’re assured of experiencing the movie just as the director intended.
